Ongoing Disaster Response Activities

ALAN is supporting multiple disasters – from the wildfires in California, to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Nate, and the earthquake in Mexico.  We continue working information and resource requests for each of these disasters. Please continue to check our needs map frequently to see where your support is needed.

We have received numerous reports from businesses and non-profits alike regarding the challenges of shipping supplies to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Some of these challenges stem from the “prioritization” for humanitarian cargo, as set by the Governor of Puerto Rico. This prioritization favors aid cargo over commercial cargo, and we are hearing reports of bookings falling through, lack of containers to ship cargo, and insufficient equipment to unload/transport containers. ALAN is working to secure information on the nature of these challenges, and helping our partners navigate them to the extent possible. We are in daily communication with emergency management and Commonwealth officials, we have on an ongoing dialogue with the carrier community to understand their available capacity and current constraints, and we continue assessing business and non-profit shipping needs, so that we can match available resources to those needs.

Similar to the challenges of shipping outside of the continental United States, those looking to move cargo via ground are also experiencing capacity constraints and pricing spikes. If you are interested in understanding more about these challenges facing spot market ground transportation, I recommend reading the Truckstop.com blog series with economist Noël Perry regarding “How Disaster Affect Rates”. The blog series provides historical perspective and shows weekly trends for disaster affected areas.

To support our partners and help them navigate both air, ocean, and ground capacity constraints, we continue to convene non-profit and business supply chain coordination calls in conjunction with Airlink, LIFT, and MIT’s Humanitarian Response Lab. These calls have transitioned to Monday / Wednesday / Friday through the end of this week.

DHS and FEMA are holding a daily private sector coordination call at 3 PM Eastern.  Dial-in number and participant passcode/pin: Dial-In #: 800-324-5531 pin: 798364 NBEOC Operations Dashboard: https://fema.connectsolutions.com/maria2017

Thanks so much for all you are doing to support disaster relief!
