Heard any good jokes at the Grand Ole Opry lately? I did when I went to my first-ever performance last week, and believe it or not, one of them was all about the supply chain.
Halfway through the show (which I was watching with Lori, our communications guru who ensures these blogs get written) I was surprised to see a comedian rather than a singer take the stage – and even more surprised to hear him deliver a hilarious joke about self-driving trucks. At first, I thought we were pretty darned lucky. After all, what were the odds that anyone would say something about trucking on the very night that two longtime logistics geeks were in the audience?
But then I did some research and discovered that an impressive 6.25% of all country music songs written since 2000 mention trucks, including many that are all about 18-wheelers and the good people who drive them.
Clearly, Nashville understands the importance of trucking.
So does the non-profit community.
After disasters hit, humanitarian organizations urgently need help getting food, shelter, water and medical supplies delivered to disaster sites. And that’s something they could never do without the equipment and skill sets of the trucking industry.
Just as important, they need to get those goods delivered without breaking the bank, because (news flash) non-profits never have as much funding as they need.
This explains why the vast majority of requests for logistics assistance that ALAN receives are usually for some form of donated trucking assistance, even when there isn’t a massive trucking shortage. It’s also why we almost always have several active trucking requests that we’re working on for various relief organizations, including some that are on our Disaster Micro-Site right now.
